Inspiration/Meaning

“Kells Fantasy” is inspired by a small portion of the illustration on the opening page of Saint Luke’s Gospel, 188 Recto.

The Book of Kells is a Latin text of the four gospels based on theVulgate, authored by Saint Jerome in approximately 384 AD. Originally, the Book of Kells resided in a monastic community on Iona, a small island off the west coast of Scotland. Due to repeated Viking attacks on the monestery on Iona, the Book of Kells was moved to Ireland in 878 for safe keeping. Since the 1660’s, it has resided in the libray of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
