Inspiration/Meaning

Children of Lir
Lir’s third wife, Aoife, was so jealous of Lir’s children that she turned them into swans by her druidic wand. The swan maiden Fionnuala called out to Aoife, accusing her and prophesying her destruction.

Aoife replied, ‘for at least three times three hundred years… you will be bound by the spell’. Many events occurred to the four enchanted swans during these nine hundred years, but eventually the prophesy was fulfilled: violence broke the long enchantment. Four withered, snow-haired human beings, shrunken in their vast old age, emerged. The hermit, a friend of the swans, administers baptism at once. And so it was done, and they went to heaven.
